Product Description

The Marine Weld Vacuum Box is a dedicated non-destructive testing (NDT) instrument for weld tightness inspection on ship hull bottom plates and other steel structures. Using the soap solution bubble method under controlled vacuum, it reliably detects weld leaks and defects, supporting quality assurance in shipbuilding, nuclear power, machinery manufacturing, and general NDT applications.

Required Conditions for Vacuum Box Tightness Testing
Test Liquid Soap solution
Vacuum Standard -0.014 MPa
Low-Temperature Operation When ambient temperature is below 0°C, add antifreeze to the soap solution to prevent icing on the weld under inspection.
Vacuum Gauge Monitors the evacuated pressure inside the box.
Air Regulating Valve Adjusts the air pressure during evacuation.
Vacuum Extraction Methods Vacuum pump or air compressor (two options available).
Applications Weld inspection, machinery, non-destructive testing (NDT), nuclear power, shipbuilding, and more.
Sealing Parts Consumable items; replaceable by the user when damaged.
Operation Method of the Vacuum Box
  1. 1Apply soap solution evenly to the weld to be inspected.
  2. 2Fix the vacuum box over the weld, ensuring airtight sealing around the entire perimeter of the box.
  3. 3Use an air extractor to evacuate the air inside the vacuum box until the internal pressure reaches -0.014 MPa.
  4. 4Observe the soap solution on the weld inside the box to evaluate weld quality: bubbles forming on the weld surface indicate weld defects, while no bubbles indicate a leak-free weld.
Precautions for Vacuum Box Inspection
  1. 1Before inspection, verify that the air compressor or vacuum pump operates normally and confirm that the foaming agent and other relevant tools are complete. Provide lighting tools if the working area has insufficient light.
  2. 2Prior to testing, thoroughly clean dust, sand, oil rust, welding slag, spatter, weld reinforcement, and any other substances that may affect leak observation from the weld and within 50 mm on both sides of the weld.
  3. 3For two adjacent weld segments under inspection, the overlap length of the vacuum box between the two tests shall be sufficient to eliminate blind viewing angles.
  4. 4If the plate or fillet weld at the inspection site is uneven, apply adequate force to press down the vacuum box, relying on the elasticity of the soft sealing sponge to achieve tight contact between the box and the test surface. Regularly inspect the soft sponge on site and replace it promptly if cracks or deterioration are found.
  5. 5The air extraction port of the vacuum box shall be fitted with a pressure gauge and an air regulating valve to adjust air pressure. When the vacuum gauge reading reaches the specified vacuum level, record the reading on the air-side pressure gauge as a reference for the air extraction pressure in subsequent tests.
  6. 6The vacuum pressure inside the box shall not be excessively high. Excessive vacuum prevents bubble formation and makes weld defects undetectable by the soap solution. Use the air regulating valve to slowly raise the vacuum inside the box to the standard value and avoid over-vacuuming.
  7. 7When the vacuum pressure inside the box reaches the specified value of -0.014 MPa, wait for pressure stabilization before starting inspection.
  8. 8During air evacuation, if air leakage occurs at the weld toe due to poor sealing, reapply soap solution and repeat the test.

Proper sealing, correct vacuum level, and a clean weld surface are essential for accurate and repeatable weld leak detection results.
